The Taste of Greece: Octopus and a Cold Mythos

If the sea has its treasures, then the table in Greece has its own.

One of my favorite meals here is grilled octopus — tender, smoky, brushed with olive oil, and brightened with lemon. It tastes like summer distilled into a single bite, a reminder that food is never just food in Greece. It’s memory, conversation, and connection.

And then there’s the beer. Mythos is the Greek classic, and I was delighted to discover they make a 0% version. I quit alcohol five years ago, but I’ve learned that taste can still carry the joy of belonging. Holding that frosty green bottle, clinking it with friends, I felt the same camaraderie — only now it’s paired with gratitude for the choice I made to step away.

This is the second in my little sensory series from Zakynthos. Taste is one of the ways we travel inward as much as outward: every bite and sip reminds us to slow down, to savor, to be here.
